“Come for the space, stay for the community.” While most companies choose a slogan that represents their brand identity, The Village Hive truly embodies its slogan.
When I first started my co-op at the Hive, I was so nervous. Not only was this my first time in a professional work environment, but I was also in a new environment. As I opened the bright red door, I had about a million thoughts running through my head. Will my employer be nice? Will I get along with the members? Will I have a good time at this placement?
I knew I would learn at my co-op, but would I truly enjoy it?
Throughout my first week, there was only Charlotte in the building. It was informative and interesting, but it was so quiet. With none of the members there, it felt empty. The following week, the place was much busier. I met many Markham members, like Olga, Jill, Sonia, and Heather. It was then that my perspective on co-op changed. Yes, co-op is an amazing opportunity to venture out into the workforce and learn about professional environments, but I believe the most valuable thing about the experience is the people.
Each person’s story and career path is so uniquely different at The Village Hive. Learning about their various decisions and pathways opened my mind to so many opportunities and perspectives that I had never considered. But the absolute best part was seeing their sense of community. Whether it was members working together on projects, asking for input on a task, or simply caring about each other’s lives, everyone supports everyone.
The genuine compassion that radiates at The Village Hive cannot be described. There were times when I had tough weeks at school, and everyone supported me through them. When I won my student council election, they had a surprise celebration of my victory! Whether it be your highest of highs or lowest of lows, The Hive is truly there for you.
When you truly think about it, this space functions like a real hive; our members are like bees in a hive, working together and supporting each other, reaching for success with the help of their community.
Now that my time at my co-op is finishing, I can truly say, I came for the space and the learning opportunities, but I wish I could stay for the community. ___________________________________________________________________
